Evaluation: a constitutive part of research practice
|
|
 |
Friday, 19 November 2010
Faculté des lettres et sciences humaines,
Espace Louis Agassiz, salle RO14
University of Neuchâtel
- Speakers: Alain Bovet, Andrew P. Carlin, Stefan Hirschauer, Martina Merz, Philippe Sormani
- Organized by Secteur Qualité, University of Neuchâtel
- Supported by the Rectors' Conference of the Swiss Universities (CRUS)
- RSVP until November 10, 2010 (philippe.sormani@unine.ch).
Programme
This conference addresses evaluation in its multiple forms as a constitutive part of research practice. Prior to any external measure or technique of evaluation, researchers themselves are indeed engaged in the evaluation of their own and their colleagues’ work. Just how, when and where does such collegial evaluation proceed? In what circumstances, according to which criteria and contingencies?

“Escalating Controversies:
Dynamics in WTO Disputes over Environment, Health and Safety Issues"
|
|
 |
Prof. Dr. Thomas Bernauer, ETH Zurich
Thursday, 26 October 2006, 18.00 - 20.00
Collegium Helveticum, Schmelzbergstr. 25, 8006 Zürich
Several studies in political science have examined social controversies
over the regulation of environmental, health and safety issues. They
have pointed to the country characteristics to explain such controversies,
or have underlined that such controversies are more likely to escalate
than disputes over other issues. In our study we tested this latter claim
by looking at more than 500 WTO trade disputes in 1995-2003. The results
show that the escalation dynamics vary between the different stages of
the dispute-settlement process. In my talk, I will discuss these findings
and elaborate on how scientific knowledge on risks might be used in the
settlement of controversies over environment, health and safety issues.
A lecture in the context of the lecture series: "Scientific
Futures, Public Affairs? Negotiating Challenges of the 21st Century
in Science, Media and Politics", organized by STS-CH and supported
by Collegium Helveticum |
